Stratis Pascalis, a leading Greek poet and translator of classic texts, anthologized the short stories of this master of modern Greek prose, whom Cavafy once referred to as the “peak of the peaks”. Using the critical edition of the Complete Works by N. D. Triantafyllopoulos, Pascalis has chosen nineteen dark tales, believing that the element of darkness is innate in Papadiamantis’ writings, common elements of which are “suggestion, mystery, magic, superstition, the supernatural and an atmosphere of fear and dream”. Pascalis prefaces and comments on these nineteen stories, attempting to show the freshness and intricacies of Papadiamantis’ writings, which subvert the simplistic models often used -unsuccessfully- to classify him.
