"Why I killed my best friend" is the story of the eventful friendship between two girls who meet in Athens during the ‘Seventies. Anna has come from Paris, the child of Leftist parents who had gone into self-exile there. Maria is from another world: colonial Africa. Their friendship starts in primary school, but comes to a sudden end when they are both at university: something unexpected puts an end to the intensities, dead-ends, and needs of a suffocating relationship. They meet again some years later. They might have changed, but deep down they’re the same. How long can they put up with each other for the sake of the past and a sense of nostalgia? Personal history is intertwined with political history throughout the novel. Anna, Maria, the Panhellenic Socialist Movement, and the all-party government all call to mind the deepest structures of a political system we have all lived through: interpersonal relationships. Amanta Michalopoulou’s new novel is about Greece after the fall of the Colonels, the “dictatorship” of friendships between women, the dark corners of quitting and of envy, and the relationships that pursue us through life
