National Literary Prize for Novel [2002]

This is 70-year-old Menis Koumandareas' longest work, and the most fully developed. An X-ray of postwar Greece, it juxtaposes historical events, consciences, everyday life, ways of thinking, ideologies, values and sentiments as they gradually change from 1949 to 1990. The novel flows through fifty years of Greek history, following the paths taken by the members of an average Athenian family as they move to the rhythms and reverberations of political events in the second half of the 20th century, while experiencing the transformation of Greece from a shattered ruin into a European country. Koumandareas depicts a segment of real life.
