The story begins in the middle of the nineteenth century and ends in the post-Occupation years. We are watching the adventures of a family of Greeks, through consecutive up-rootings, from the far ends of Eastern Anatolia to Russia to finally Northern Greece. Almost metaphysical, the figure of the Ethnarch Panayiotaros dominates the first part of the novel ("Mythology"), but still continues to haunt the dreams and hopes of his descendants until the very end. In contrast, the element which seems to prevail in the second part ("History") is the realistic portrayal of life during the successive expatriations, while the Occupation days are narrated in a more sympathetic, almost affectionate spirit in the novel's third and final part ("Flow").
