An excellent monograph devoted to a work that has become identified with the Greek soprano is that by Nikos Bakounakis, entitled Callas-Medea (Kastaniotis, 1995). This volume focuses on the famous “Greek” production of Medea that was first staged in Dallas, Texas, in 1958, in association with two other leading Greek artists, Alexis Minotis (director) and Yannis Tsarouchis (scenery, costumes). The book’s 180 pages provide analytical and photographic documentation with shots from the staging of the production (Dallas, Covent Garden, Epidaurus, La Scala), together with reproductions of the original designs for the scenery and costumes and the director’s exercise books. The author’s comprehensive texts point out the differentiating elements identifying this production and distinguishing it as a “Greek-classic” in contrast to the post-baroque classicist environment of the composer’s times.
