The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Constantinople has been a major institution of the orthodox world in the Ottoman Empire for nearly five centuries (1453-1923), during which it also became part of the Sultan's administration. This book contributes to the history of the Great Church and of orthodox peoples in the Balkans. It is also a study of ottoman institutions to the extent that it considers the relations between the Patriarchate and the Sublime Porte, bringing into focus the point of view of the Empire's administration. The analysis of relevant ottoman documents has attempted to divest itself both of legalistic interpretations and of certain ideological stereotypes established mainly under the influence of nationalism in the Balkans.
