Rembetiko is a novel by the Greek film director Kostas Ferris, who won the Berlin Gold Bear award in 1984 with REMBETIKO, a celebration of the lowlife music
of '20's Athens. Now Ferris has written a novelized version of the story.
The novel records the life of Marika Ninou, a child of the backstreets who became a singing legend but who finally succumbed to increasing isolation, her life ending in obscurity. The film attained cult status.
