The narrative world of Tassos Goudelis (born in Athens in 1949), having crystallized in his previous four books, is broadened in these ten stories making up Alfred's Sleep. Faithful to the minimalistic writing he employed in his previous collection, Shades of Women, the author seeks the limits of ellipticalness through a particular, sui generis form of narration: characters, dialogue, nuances, emotional allusions concerning the heroes entice the reader into an intertextual game. His rhythm is steady and light, while the dividing line between reality and illusion remains unclear. A letter from the American author Washington Irving (creator of the legendary hero Rip Van Winkle) to his sister just before he dies, in which he describes the outline of an autobiographical novel, provides the basis for Tassos Goudelis to create a fluid microcosm of exceptional interest.
