Fires of Judas, Ashes of Oedipus

Rea Galanaki

Kastaniotis, 2009

ISBN 978-960-03-4992-4, [In Print]
Price € 19,08

The arrival of a young Greek-Jewish teacher in a mountain village of Crete in the year 2000 and the folk custom of burning the Judas provide the grounds for, on the one hand, a look behind the scenes of the fiercely introverted mountain communities of the island and, on the other, the unfolding of an old Cretan tradition which ascribes to the Biblical Judas the fate of the mythical Oedipus. Law and transgression, love affairs and rituals, murder and sealed lips, radical notions and age-old beliefs comprise a scenery brimming with conflict and contradictions, in which the young woman seeks the roots of her troubled family history. Simultaneously, the myth around Judas and Oedipus, a myth about absolute evil, creeps along its own dark and convoluted passageways: beginning in the far reaches of time and remaining alive to this day serving, but also interpreting the rigid structures of hermetically closed societies. A ‘double’ book by the widely translated Rhea Galanaki which illustrates the ways in which myth is interwoven with contemporary life - as is, at all events, literature with reality.
