Tinellos, a fictional 8th century BC bard who claims to be Homer’s grandfather, recounts his life-story to his grandson. He learns his trade from a professional musician, then travels from the shores of Asia Minor to Corinth, Mycenae, Thrace and the Aegean islands. He gets entangled with a horde of beggars in Corinth, catches the plague, attends the Olympic Games, falls madly in love on Euboea, almost dies in Thrace, is robbed in the Aegean and founds a realm of sexual licence on a desert island. Winged Words reflects the themes of Hellenistic fiction with its reversals of fate, love and betrayal, and the clash of hope with fear. Though the hero’s antics are comic, there is a sense underlying the story that he feels unfulfilled to the end of his life. His only real joy is in doing what his grandson will later excel at, telling a story. (Ithaca Online, www.ekebi.gr)
