An author visits a strange and remote city, a mountain settlement of stone skyscrapers. There the ghosts of literary characters come alive from the books he remembers. Keeping him locked up, they force him to write stories for them, and the more life he gives them, the more he forgets himself... “Here, in stone country, the brothers Karamazov live and reign. Alexei has come to an understanding with Merceau, and his father has a close friend in Henry Chinaski; they drink at honky-tonks and bet on suspicious boxing matches. In the Jewish ghetto, Shylock pulls the strings, and there you will find other Jews as well, taken straight out of Isaac Bashevis Singer's books. They've locked Gregor Samsa up in the basement, Philip Marlowe and Sam Spade pose as police officers, while service personnel are made up of dozens of identical Bartleby-pencil-pushers. You will see characters you have read about come alive again, provided you remember them... As Ι, too, remember them. Ι am a prisoner on the top floor of a skyscraper, confined to a fiction "form", Ι write their stories... They've promised me that they'll release me, but with every day that passes, they come alive and Ι forget who Ι am (who Ι was) and where Ι must return to when (or if) I am ever let go...”
