Photographer Yannis Skoulas knows parts of Crete that few people know. To capture the images in this handsome produced bilingual Greek-English volume, he sought out isolated remains of the civilizations that have left their mark on the island over the centuries. The sites, all off the beaten track, include Mycenean pit graves at Fourni, dug in the Late Minoan period; three two-storey villas of the same period found in Tylissos 100 years ago after a villager unearthed a 50-kilo cauldron by chance; Gournia, the best preserved Minoan city in Crete; a Roman carriageway at Eleutherna; and stalagmites in a cave at Amnisos, used for religious rites in Neolithic, Minoan and Roman times. With accompanying texts by Manolis Stefanakis, lecturer at the University of the Aegean, and Alexandra Karetsou, honorary ephor of antiquities, providing the necessary information and context, and a capable English translation by Geoffrey Cox, this book will inspire readers to explore for themselves.
