Thanassis Razikotsikas was the chief of the Messolongian fighters during the Greek War for Independence and was the first to fall, at the age of twenty-eight, on 11 April 1826, when the besieged carried out their heroic exodus. His presence and action symbolise, in a way both unwavering and vivid, the Greeks' persistence in freeing themselves of a tyranny that was incompatible with fundamental human rights. With the help of original material and a commitment to presenting the historical facts, the author attempts to trace Razikotsikas' participation in events that make up a dramatic portrait of that era.
