Underlit is Niki Hadzidimitriou΄s second book following her short prose pieces published under the general title In the Absence of the Addressee.
Eleven short, skeptical texts make up the first part (“The Inner Landscapes”); confessions to an invisible mirror or to the reader.
The second part (“Narratives in the Present Perfect Tense”) consists of four extensive short stories placed within a specific temporal and historical context. Sixteenth century Spain, the English countryside and the Balkans of the 19th century, but also a decadent Rome, provide the backdrop for the heroes as well as the emotions of the author, as memories intercut reality. It is like a retrospective fresco, underlit by the ash-colored brush strokes of the pen.
